Pfizer announced this morning that the vaccine currently on trial period to fight Covid-19 has proved over 90% effective. This comes after an interim analysis was made available.
It looked at the first 94 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, from the over 43,000 volunteers to be part of the study who either received the vaccine or a placebo. It found that less than 10% of cases were in patients who received the second dose of a two-dose vaccine, and 90% of the cases were patients who received the placebo.
“It is a great day for science. It is a great day for humanity when you realize your vaccine has 90% effectiveness. That’s overwhelming,” said Dr. Albert Bourla in an interview with CNBC.
“You understand that the hopes of billions of people and millions of businesses and hundreds of governments that were felt on our shoulders. Now… I think we can see light at the end of the tunnel.”
It all sounds great right? But, what does that mean for us? With early access to the vaccine some time in December of 2020, and more free access to it by Spring 2021, it means we’re on track to kick this thing to the curve! And the numbers support it! And businesses support it too. Within hours of the announcement Wall Street was surging with record highs. The Dow Jones saw a gain of over 5%, the S&P surged 3.6%, and the Nasdaq climbed over 12,000.
All this tells us that better days are ahead. We can look forward to the days where concerts and sports games are once again filled with raging fans, waiting to live out a once-in-a-lifetime experience and they will no longer fear the person that’s next to them. We are ready to go outside, enjoy the crowd and the best of the entertainment world. Now, science is almost ready for us to enjoy the stages once again.
This interim study is soon to be finalized, projected to be completed in the third week of November. There are expected to be 50 million doses of the vaccine already produced, and around 1.3 billion doses in 2021. All pending the approval of the FDA.
